HEAVY EQUIPMENT SAFETY
FORKLIFTS, EXCAVATORS, MOBILE CRANES, TRAILERS, AND TANKERS SAFETY
1.
FORKLIFTS SAFETY
FORKLIFTS SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
1.
The
forklifts designed for use on paved areas shall not be operated off-road or in
traffic.
2.
The
forklifts driving on a public road shall be restricted to an absolute minimum
as per standards.
3.
The
forklift operator shall have a valid specific driving license for forklifts and
special training.
4.
The
forklifts diesel or petrol-engine forklifts shall not be used in confined areas
where there is a risk that exhaust fumes may accumulate unless adequate
ventilation should be provided for the operator.
5.
The
forklift operator cab shall have an overhead guard to protect it from the
dropped objects.
6.
The
forklift shall be fitted with steps and grab handles to provide safe and easy
access or egress.
7.
The
forklift operator seat shall be adjustable, allowing for forwarding and
rearward movement, and equipped with at least a 2-point seat belt for the
operator.
8.
The
forklift instruments shall be visible and controlled easily accessible or within
reach from the operator's seat.
9.
The
forklifts shall be fitted with proper mirrors to enhance vehicle driver
visibility and with flashing or rotating yellow lights.
10.
The
forklifts provided at least one fire extinguisher that is easily accessible in
case of fire.
11.
A
first aid kit shall also be provided if the forklifts are intended to be
operated in isolated cabins.
12.
Night-time
working, the vehicle shall be equipped with front spotlights and the operator
shall wear a hi-visibility vest.
13.
The
forklift shall have twin mast rams to provide visibility for the operator when
moving forward, and also be equipped with reversing alarm system to alert
nearby working personnel.
14.
The
forklifts shall have four wheels minimum to ensure the stability of forklifts.
15. A forklift's engine shall have an emergency stop mechanism, or in the case of an electric motor, a quick release of the battery connections or electric fire.
2.
EXCAVATOR SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Excavators
shall not be driven on public roads this is only construction equipment.
2.
Excavator
operators shall have a valid driving license.
3.
The
Excavator operator's cabin shall be air-conditioned or provided a fan, and have
an overhead guard to protect from the dropped objects.
4.
The
excavator should be fitted with steps and grab handles to provide safe and ease
to access.
5.
The
excavator operator seat shall be adjustable, allowing for forwarding and
rearward movement during operation.
6.
All
instruments of the excavator shall be visible and controlled easily accessible
or within reach from the operator's seat.
7.
The
Excavator windscreen shall have a windscreen wiper working in properly.
8.
The
excavator shall be available with a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit and
fire extinguishers. During the night-time working, the excavator shall be
equipped with spotlights and floodlights for improved visibility.
9.
The
excavator engine shall have an emergency stop mechanism button and is easy to
operate.
10. Excavators shall be monthly and annually inspected and certified by a Company-approved third-party inspection authority, which will include a functional test of the excavator. It will also include a visual examination of the excavator, including chassis, revolving frame, boom and loading shovel arms, buckets, where applicable track links and attachment pins, drive sprockets and chains, for damage, wear and cracks, corrosion, hydraulics, and engine components of excavator, etc.
3.
MOBILE CRANES SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Mobile
cranes shall not be driven on public roads in traffic.
2.
The
mobile crane operator shall have a valid driving license as per country.
3.
Mobile
cranes shall not carry cargo over the maximum specified by the manufacturer of
the mobile crane.
4.
The
mobile crane operator cab shall be air-conditioned or provided with a fan, and
have an overhead guard to protect from the dropped objects.
5.
The
mobile crane shall be fitted with steps and grab handles to provide safe and
easy access.
6.
The
mobile crane operator seat shall be adjustable, allowing for forwarding and
rearward movement of the mobile crane.
7.
The
mobile crane instruments or tools shall be visible and controlled easily
accessible or within reach from the crane operator's seat.
8.
The
mobile crane windscreen shall have a windscreen wiper working properly.
9.
Mobile
crane fitted with outriggers, the controls of the outrigger shall be outside
the operator cabin and the outriggers shall have prominent markings that become
visible and clear when it is fully extended outriggers.
10.
The
mobile crane shall have an automatic safe working load (SWL) indicator system
which displays safe working load (SWL) in kg, load radius indication, boom
length, and angle, and provides warning upon approach to safe working load SWL.
11. The mobile crane tools or equipment available a level indicator, wind speed indicator with audible warning as the wind speed limit is approached, hoist motion cut-outs to prevent complete unspooling of hoist rope, an overload cut-out device to prevent lifting of loads above the capacity of the crane.
4.
TRAILER'S SAFETY
1.
The
trailers have at least one spare wheel, which will be securely mounted in the
trailer.
2.
The
trailer painted alternate yellow and black chevrons or reflective tape on the
bumper at least 150mm high, across the entire rear width of the trailer.
3.
Trailer
lighting shall include side-lights, fog -lights, reverse- lights, rear -lights,
brake -lights, and indicator hazard lights of the trailer.
4.
The
trailer shall have coupling chains, if not attached by the fifth wheel.
5.
The
trailer rigid type with a box body, then drop sides, and tailgate, hinges, and
securing pins shall be fitted in the trailer.
6.
Trailer
side and rear under-run protection shall be fitted and protected.
7.
All
trailers shall have proper emergency braking systems fitted.
8.
All
airbrakes shall be fail-safe upon loss of air pressure in the trailer.
9.
The
trailer side stanchions are of sufficient strength and design to hold the load
on the load bed of the trailer.
10.
The
trailer load is overhanging the rear of the trailer by 1.5m or more, has
reflective red and white marker boards displayed on the rear of the load, and
is securely fastened to load.
11.
The
trailer heavy vehicles shall undergo a yearly detailed vehicle safety
inspection to ensure the vehicle meets the established minimum safety
standards.
12.
The
two-line or three-line trailer brake system which is fail-safe on the rear
axle, color-coded palm couplings of the trailer.
13.
The
manual securing device locks the trailer brakes when the trailer is uncoupled.
14. The trailer side restraints contain long loads protected.
5.
TANKERS SAFETY
1.
The
Tanker shall be registered in the country.
2.
Tankers
that transport large quantities of dangerous goods, shall meet the requirements
on the carriage of dangerous goods by road.
3.
Tankers
only are used on paved roads, and not for off-road travel such as on mountain
roads, or deserts unless built with off-road travel specifications.
4.
The
tanker shall not carry cargo over the maximum specified load by the
manufacturer of the tanker.
5.
The
tanker should have to reverse alarm system, wheel nut position indicators that
identify when wheel nuts have loosened, wheel chocks, and spray-suppression
flaps mud flaps with conspicuous rear and side markings.
6.
The
tanker driver cabin shall be constructed with materials not readily flammable
material. There shall be a clear space of not less than 15cm between the tank
and the cabin.
7.
The
tanker shall have an electronic trailer stability control rollover prevention
system.
8.
The
tanker shall be fitted with under-run protection for both side and rear of the
tanker.
9.
Tanker
should have heavy-duty wide-angled fully adjustable rear vision mirrors on both
driver and passenger sides of the tanker.
10.
Tanker
convex mirrors are fitted appropriately to ensure the adequate vision of blind
spots, including on the passenger outside.
11.
Tanker
single-piece rims as available in the tanker.
12.
The
tanks should be fitted with a minimum of two manholes, and the manhole cover
shall meet safety requirements and be adequate to protect against overturning
damage.
13.
A
tanker brake interlock system shall be in place so that the vehicle cannot be
moved while loading or offloading is in the progress of the tanker.
14.
The
tanker fuel tanks should be positioned in a way that any leakage will drain
towards the ground without coming into any hot surfaces of the tanker.
15.
The
tankers shall be limited to a maximum speed of 80km/h as per the road speed
limits.
16.
The
tanker skidded tanks shall only be carried on trailers that are a minimum of
2.8m wide.
